Cassandra Wilson’s ‘Coming Forth Day By Day’ is and album of moody, soulful interpretations of one of Wilson’s biggest influences – Billie Holliday – and the languid opener, sung in a low, dark growl sets the benchmark for the set. ‘Billie’s Blues’ has a hypnotic, trance like vibe while many of the tracks have an almost ‘otherworldly’ aura about them, namely the strange-jazz of ‘Crazy He Calls Me’, the ebb and flow of ‘All Of Me’ and the light and shade of ‘Good Morning Heartache’. ‘You Got To My Head’ is a welcome break from the more opiated feel of the previous tracks. ‘Strange Fruit’ is covered almost reverentially while the final track is the only self-penned cut on the album, the sorrowful ‘Last Song (For Lester)’ an ode to Holliday’s musical love Lester Young.
