Drummer Lascelles Gordon has crafted an intriguing and at times far out Jazz set in the form of ‘Blackism’ that borrows from a diverse range of influences while remaining inventive. The title track is a swaggering, mid tempo deep groove, ‘In Rhythm’ has afro influences amidst the crashing percussion while ‘Ofilli’ is a multi-layered warped Afro-beat pounder. ‘Goodbye NYC’ is almost an abstract jam while the loose and airy ‘Sawahla’ features the delicate tenor sax of Heliocentrics man Jamie Arben. One to absorb fully to appreciate the complexity of the layering.
