‘Think’ was Lonnie Smith’s first album for Blue Note and second overall. It dates from 1968 and a brilliant Hammond album it is too. The line-up includes trumpeter Lee Morgan. saxophonist David Fathead Newman plus some incredible guitar work from Melvin Sparks. ‘Think’ starts with an eleven-minute barnstorming tune ‘Son Of Ice Bag’ that features a muscular solo from Lonnie Smith. The percussive and even longer ‘The Call Of The Wild’ is equally vibrant with Smith and Morgan on top form ably supported by Newman. Aretha’s ‘Think’ is given a respectably Jazz workout that after a subdued opening gets progressively funkier. ‘Slouchin’ concludes a superb Hammond set in a relaxed groovy style.
