Lee Morgan’s ‘Taru’, was originally recorded in 1968 and similarly unreleased at the time. Compositionally it is a mix of swing tunes, funky numbers and more traditional ballads, perhaps an indication of the crossroads at which jazz sat at the time. The album is altogether more groovy, but on tracks like ‘Avotja One’ and ‘Get Yourself Together’ (the latter composed by Morgan) there is sophisticated approach heard in the heavy swing. George Benson features on the record, albeit predominately in the background, except on ‘Dee Lawd’ and ‘Durem’ where his unmistakable soloing is ever present.
