Percussionist Ray Barretto recorded his classic Latin Jazz album ‘Acid’ for the Fania label in 1968 at their New York studios. It is one of the most iconic Latin albums and includes the brilliant instrumental title track which features heavy percussion over a driving bass line topped by blazing trumpets. ‘Espiritu Libre’ is 8 minutes of pure vibe, another percussion heavy instrumental, darker and more experimental than the title track but
totally compelling. The other tracks feature English spoken Latino Soul vocals the most notable being ‘El Nouvo Barretto’, ‘Soul Drummers’ and ‘Mercy Mercy Baby’ plus the Espanic vocal ‘Sola Te Dejare’ . As you would expect from period this album has a vibrant raw sound and features some of the cream of New York Latin musicians. Great Latin Jazz album.
