Leela James possesses one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Soul music, steeped in southern soul tradition and gospel roots yet totally modern as well. Her excellent debut album ‘A change is gonna come’ from 2005 is finally released on vinyl for the first time. Highlights are ‘Music’ a superb catchy contemporary take on upper mid tempo Southern Soul . ‘Good Time’ is a dancer using the rhythm from Funky Sensation updated for the 2000’s. ‘Rain’ is an intriguing mid tempo song with a walking bass line.with a D’Angelo feel ‘When You Love Somebody’ is a fabulous reinterpretation of Al Kooper’s ‘I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know’ which really illustrates the power and beauty of Leela’s fantastic voice, real Southern Soul 2000’s style and the albums absolute highlight. ‘Mistreating Me’ is another highlight an excellent moody down tempo.

Sam Cooke’s classic ‘A Change Is Gonns Come’ is given a sympathetic contemporary adaptation. ‘Long Time Coming is a hard hitting horn backed R&B/Soul track to conclude this album that introduced us to the singer that seamlessly incorporated real Soul music with contemporary R&B, really strong album.
