A Lover Was Born

Kelly Finnigan has established himself as one of the leading voices and producers of retro Soul over the past few years.  His two previous solo albums,  as part of the Monophonics and producing The Sextones amongst others, are all testaments to his talent. His third solo album ‘A Lover Was Born’ contains eleven new quality soulful songs that sound and feel as if they were recorded in the early to mid 70s, full of drama and changes as Kelly tells his stories. His vocals are as soulful as ever, supported by backing singers and full instrumentations with horns, strings and percussion. There are some strong upper mid tempo, semi funky stutters like ‘His Love Ain’t Real’ and ‘Chosen Few’. ‘Get A Hold Of Yourself ‘ is a horn-backed soul dancer, whilst the killer ‘Love (Your Pain Goes Deeper)’ is a great multi-paced track that really builds are standouts. His characteristic beat ballads include the excellent stepper ‘Be Your Own Shelter’, dramatic and atmospheric ‘Walk Away From Me’, ‘Prove My Love’, ‘Cold World’ and slightly slower ‘Let Me Count The Reasons’ and ‘Count Me Out’. Overall  a very strong album, possibly his best to date and certainly one of the Soul albums of the year 2024 with a capital S!
