This concert was recorded at Birdland on 21st February 1954. Originally released over three 10” LPs in 1954, it was subsequently reissued as two 12” vinyl LPs in 1956 with all the tracks from the 10” LPs included plus an alternative master of ‘Quicksilver’. The band is top draw. Trumpeter Clifford Brown is paired with alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson in the horn section. The rhythm section comprises pianist Horace Silver and bass player Curly Russell. Volume 2 hits the ground running with a blistering cover of J J Johnson’s ‘Wee Dot’. The ballad ‘If I had You’ is a short breather between the Hard Bop grooves. There is an alternative super-fast take of ‘Quicksilver’ (the first being on Volume 1), before two Charlie Parker cuts are given elongated renditions. First up is the very catchy ‘Now’s The Time’, which builds up a head of steam gradually. Finally, ‘Confirmation’ is taken at breakneck speed again. The combination of Art Blakey and Horace Silver was electric, whilst Clifford Brown was a talent that was lost to the Jazz world way too soon. This is a rare opportunity to enjoy his playing in live setting.
