New Orleans born trumpeter and multi-instrumentalist Nicholas Payton delivers another eclectic array of sounds in the form of ‘Afro-Caribbean Mixtape’. Describing the set as a musical journey that traces the journey of jazz from the first slave ship landings in the Caribbean to it’s excursion throughout the USA, tracks like the shimmering ‘#BAmboula’ with its Cuban vibe, the Max Roach referencing ‘Jazz Is A Four Letter Word’ and the poly rhythmic ‘Kimathi (main Theme)’ are standouts. There’s a lot of leftfield thinking and playing here which reflects the ethos of this double CD project. ‘Junie’s Boogie’ is a great spacey jam, the sprawling ‘Kimathi/For Our Elders and Our Children’ and the funky ‘The Egyptian Second Line’ are also strong points on an engaging and thought provoking set.
