Organ player Lonnie Smith releases a live trio album recorded at the Jazz Standard in New York to celebrate his 75th birthday last year. This Blue Note set starts with a fine flowing version of Wayne Shorter’s ‘Juju’ and Paul Simon’s ’50 Ways To Leave Your Lover’ is given a rousing and climatic interpretation. Smith’s take on Freddie Hubbard’s classic ‘Up Jumped Spring’ is wonderful and uplifting. The pace slows for the evocative ‘Devika’, he even revisits his 70’s composition ‘All In My Mind’. The Hammond legend is ably supported by drummer Jonathan Blake and guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg.
