Ancient Lights’ is the debut album from Uniting of Opposites, the new musical venture from Tim Liken, Clem Alford and Ben Hazleton. The album draws on a myriad of jazz influences ranging from East to West with a heavy Indian feel in evidence on the mid tempo, dub heavy ‘Mints’. ‘Ancient Lights’ is a more groove based effort that utilises Marcina Arnold’s almost whispered vocal to give an ethereal feel in places while ‘Dr Roach’ is a more open, spacious number that majors on Idris Rahman’s husky clarinet. The sitar heavy ‘Vortex Number 9’ and ‘Car Number 27/Mr Alpo’ area grounded in that Ravi Shankar space of late 60s jazz/psych while the brooding ‘Uniting Of Opposites’ grumbles and growls like a menacing storm over a sonic landscape. One to absorb – it rewards the time spent to let it grow.
