1972 album by The Dells ‘Sweet As Funk Can Be’ was mainly co-written by Terry Callier and Larry Wade and comprises a mix of tough funky grooves as in ‘Windy City Soul’, soaring mid tempo dancers like ‘Til I See You Again’, the wonderful beat ballad ‘When You’re Alone’ as well as the tender, sweet ‘Just As Long As We’re In Love’ that allows Johnny Carter’s gravely vocals to really shine. ‘Do What You Gotta babe’ is another, more lushly orchestrated ballad while the album is punctuated by ‘segues’ – little interludes between most to the tracks designed to give the set a storybook feel.
