Freddie Hubbard’s Atlantic debut is a joyful explosion of mid 60’s Soul/Jazz. The album kicks off with two exuberant cuts ‘Backlash’ and ‘Return Of The Prodigal Son’ that combine a finger popping Motown groove with a righteous Baptist Beat. ‘On The Quee Tee’ and ‘Up Jumped Spring’ offer more challenging time signatures and show the jazzier side to Freddie. Standout is however the original version of Freddie’s ‘Little Sunflower’ that is one of the most beautiful pieces in recorded Jazz. Hubbard’s restrained solo is complimented by James Spaulding’s flute to evoke the feeling of coming across a flower in the desert wonderful. Freddie was at his creative peak at this time and establishing the reputation as the finest trumpet player of his generation. ‘Backlash’ is man in his musical prime
