Released in 1997, Erykah Badu’s Neo-Soul classic Baduizm is widely regarded as the album that started the movement and still sounds fresh and relevant. Blurring the lines between jazz, soul, R&B, and hip-hop this seminal record signalled a new approach to R&B that was set apart from contemporaries such as Toni Braxton, En Vogue, BLACKstreet, and Keith Sweat: this new cool had spirituality and a super fly attitude at its heart. ‘On And On’ brought her to wider attention but swaggering gems like ‘Appletree’, the superbly chilled ‘Next Lifetime’ and the jazzy, open feel of ‘Certainly’ score high. The vinyl crackle of ‘No Love’ was a favoutite technique of the time giving an analouge vibe to the cut while the lush ‘Drama’ is cool at it’s finest. Brilliant album that is well worth a revisit and rediscovery.
