Jazzland Recordings (home to the likes of Bugge Wesseltoft and Beady Belle among others) have unearthed a gem in the form of Oslo based Mosambique. ‘Big City Moves’ blends pacey afro jazz with broken beat, dance and funk on a superbly energetic set. ‘Mr Cool’ has a punchy, slamming groove that breaks down into a mellow refrain in parts taking in the best of 70s NY fusion, ‘The Underdog’ has hints of Jazzanova in places – skittering, busy syncopated beats – but also slides into mellower territory, while the Afro-Funk ‘Fela’ shows another side with the melody driven by the horns and the groove driven home by the growling Afro-beat of the drums. The title of ‘That’s Too Fast’ hints at the breakneck pace of the tune – a frantic, powerhouse jam – while ‘Into The Night’ trades on multiple layers of rhythm and groove to create a free flowing fusion piece. The rhodes-heavy title track ‘Big City Moves’ is a killer late 70s fusion style dancer. Great stuff.
