Pianist Andrew Hill’s ‘Black Fire’ was his first album for Blue Note. At times brilliant, always challenging, Hill’s playing extended the boundaries of Jazz piano and is heavily influenced by Thelonious Monk. ‘Black Fire’ is one of Hill’s finest albums in that it combines exploration with accessibility. Tracks like ‘Pumpkin’ and ‘Subterfuge’ are fine examples still with enough groove mixed with wonderful improvisation from the pianist and tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson. Rhythm support is supplied by one of Jazz’s most dynamic, yet under-rated drummers, Ray Haynes and the experimental Richard Davis on bass. ‘Black Fire’ remains one of the defining albums of Hill’s intriguing and diverse discography.
