‘Blue Spirits’ is a great Freddie Hubbard album. It comprises two sessions recorded on 19th and 26th February 1965. Two tracks are performed by an octet with a horn line of Freddie, James Spaulding (alto and flute), Joe Henderson (tenor) and Kiane Zawadi (euphonium) and three by a septet where Hank Mobley replaces Henderson. On the octet date the rhythm section is Harold Mabern (piano), Larry Ridley (bass), Clifford Jarvis (drums) and Big Black (congas). The rhythm section for the septet is entirely different with McCoy Tyner (piano), Bob Cranshaw (bass) and Pete LaRoca (drums) and no supplementary percussion. It is the later session that produced the fantastic ‘Blue Spirits’ – a classic Blue Note waltz that Freddie attacks with characteristic vigour before passing solo duties onto the flute of James Spaulding, the soulful tenor sax of Hank Mobley and finally pianist McCoy Tyner. Freddie’s refrain is truly wonderful towards the conclusion of this 12-minute opus. From the same recording date, the fiery ‘Jodo’ sees Hubbard on top form. Mobley is on fire too and the ensemble horn lines are wholly infectious. The presence of Kiane Zawadi’s euphonium gives the whole set a unique feel. In addition, ‘Cunga Black’ dedicated to the percussionist Big Black, who features on this and another tune, the spiritual Soul Jazz of ‘Soul Surge’ and the driving ‘Outer Forces’ make ‘Blue Spirits’ a totally memorable set.
