‘The Blues And Abstract Truth’ is one of THE greatest albums recorded for Impulse! Records. From 1961, it features an all-star line-up including Freddie Hubbard, Eric Dolphy and Nelson himself in the horn section.  The rhythm section features bassist Paul Chambers, drummer Roy Haynes and the eloquent Bill Evans on piano.  Standout track is what has become a Jazz standard in the haunting and beautiful ‘Stolen Moments’, the young Hubbard steals the show which is no mean feat given the quality of the contributions from the other members of the band especially Evans and Dolphy on flute.  All six pieces are written by Nelson and there are nods towards the avant-garde in his playing and on compositions like ‘Teenie’s Blues’ and ‘’Hoe-Down’.  ‘Cascades’ is more conventional being a driving slice of Hard Bop that oozes class.  Few albums can be deemed essential listening, ‘The Blues And Abstract Truth’ is one such.
