Released in 1963, ‘Buhaina’s Delight’ was recorded in two sessions on 28th November and 18th December 1961. By the time of the album’s release, Art Blakey had moved to Riverside. It is a sextet session with a sumptuous horn line-up of Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter and Curtis Fuller. In the rhythm section, Cedar Walton and Jymie Merritt are alongside Blakey. The opener, a Wayne Shorter comp, ‘Backstage Sally’ is a slow blues which illustrates how tight this line-up was. The saxophonist also contributed the aptly entitled ‘Contemplation’, which is another slow thoughtful tune that has a doleful quality. ‘Bu’s Delight’, from the pen of Curtis Fuller, is a brash and fiery Hard Bop piece with Art and the whole band ‘on it’. Shorter’s ‘Reincarnation Blues’ is a solid driving Jazz Messengers tune. Hubbard plays magnificently, soaring above the percussive maelstrom that is Blakey. Cedar Walton, as always with Blakey, is the master of fluidity, technical brilliance and no little subtlety. Cedar Walton’s ‘Shay Jake’ is yet another fine Hard Bop track with trumpeter Hubbard once again at his peak. The Hard Bop version of Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer’s ‘Moon River’ bears little resemblance to the song from ‘Breakfast At Tiffany’s’ save the opening/ closing theme. Blakey converts the dreamy movie tune into a hard, belting Bop session. It is a sensational ensemble performance and quite unlike any other interpretation. ‘Buhaina’s Delight’ is yet another great Jazz Messengers release.
