It’s been nearly five years since we last heard from Australian soulstress Chelsea Wilson but the wait is worth it with the arrival of her sophomore album, ‘Chasing Gold’. Where her debut set had its feet planted in earthier roots, this new set is a slick, boogie fuelled tour de force that gathers songs of celebration and tales of heartache in one perfectly crafted package. Disco meets rare groove, Chic guitar licks collide with deep, growling basslines, and delicate piano licks jostle with late 70s NY strings across this ten-track set. The super-sultry ‘Real Love’ is Chelsea with the sass-factor ratcheted up to 110%, the urgent, thumping beat of ‘Give You Up’ launches a red hot dance groove that fits Chelsea’s sweet voice to a tee – the combination of tense boogie and plaintive vocals works so well – while the pounding 4/4 beat of ‘Chasing Gold’ creates an irresistible dance groove that’s impossible not to move to. The pleading ‘Breaking Down’ is another lyrically strong number with a jazzy touch that again shows off great songwriting, there’s more than a nod to Stevie’s ‘I Wish’ on the bouncy ‘Word Is Out’ while the angular groove of ‘I Won’t Choose You’ is driven along by a rolling piano line and tough groove that builds with strings and superb harmonies to create a brilliant bookend to this absolutely essential album. Don’t miss the brilliant, inventive version of ‘Take Back The Night’ too. Class.
