There are few Jazz vocalists who can come close to the excellence of Carmen Lundy who has made a string of great albums featuring her own penned new songs. ‘Code Noir’ continues where ‘Soul To Soul’ left off in terms of quality, but is a very different style of album. ‘Code Noir’ has a more acoustic feel, it features the wonderful Patrice Rushen on Piano’, Ben Williams on acoustic and electric bass, Jeff Parker on electric guitar, Kendrick Scott on drums and percussion and Elisabeth Oei on background vocals. In addition to vocals, Lundy also plays keyboards and guitar and arranged all the songs. The album has a strong uplifting message throughout offering healing in the times we live in. ‘Blacks and Blues’ is a lovely track that builds to a crescendo. ‘Afterglow’ has more tempo and really swings. ‘Live out Loud’, ‘Have a little Faith’ and the beautiful ‘The Island, The Sea and You’ have a gentle Bossa groove. ‘I got Your Number’ and ‘Another Chance’ are lovely ballads. Carmen Lundy has hit the spot again with another superb album that will grow all over you if you give it a chance.
