‘Live At Birdland contains three tracks recorded at the legendary Jazz club on 8th October 1963. Mongo Santamaria’s ‘Afro Blue’ is rendered with such power and poise that it has become the definitive instrumental Jazz version. It is followed by Billy Eckstine’s lovely ‘I Want To Talk About You’, a real Coltrane favourite since he recorded it in the 50’s for the Prestige record label. The live version is invigorated by the saxophonist’s engaging yet challenging style c 1963. ‘Promise’, a Trane composition is a fine yet little known modal groove. There are two studio cuts too. Firstly, the mesmerising and poignant ‘Alabama’, whose subject matter was a pivotal event in the civil rights struggle. ‘Live At Birdland’ is classic Coltrane.
