Walter Bishop Jr – Coral Keys, receives its first ever US vinyl reissue on Black Jazz records since its first pressing in 1971, courtesy of Real Gone Music. Produced by Gene Russell and featuring a stalwart lineup of players—from Idris Muhammad and Alan Schwartz Benger on Drums, Reggie Johnson on Bass, Harold Vick on Soprano and Flute and Woody Shaw on Trumpet—Coral Keys has something for every Jazz fan. It is, predominantly, a piano-led album, overlaid by the punchy and percussive keys of Bishop Jr. The album segues between different styles of Jazz—an early and fine example of Jazz-Fusion—masterminded by the Julliard educated Bishop Jr. The title track Coral Keys bustles with an inner-city Latin energy, regimented with rimshots and chiming rides, underlaid with the ebbing flute of Vick. The hard bop of freedom suite reconnects Bishop’s output with the rawness and versatility of the New York Jazz scene, its perambulating and taught bass-line romping between Bishop Jr’s melodic stabs.
