Brilliant survey of some of the best (and largely under-heard) disco/funk/electro sounds to come out of Nigeria’s Capital city from the late 70s and early 80s. ‘Doing It In Lagos’ includes some superb slices of indie disco and homemade soul: Steve Monite’s ‘Only You’ brings to mind Wally Badarou – cavernous, hypnotic disco with barely sung vocals but utterly engaging – Oby Onyioha’s brilliant sweetly sung soul-boogie ‘Enjoy Your Love’ is a real gem, Rick Asikpo’s ‘Too Hot’ has a distinct NY percussive disco/Leroy Burgess feel, Mike Umoh’s ‘Shake Your Body’ has those African vibes running through but points to US disco while Gboyega Adelaja’s spacy jazz funker ‘Colourful Environment’ also hits home. So many really good tracks here to discover – take a voyage through the private dancefloors of Lagos’ past!
