Donny Hathaway made this his second album in 1971, it followed his sensational highly acclaimed debut ‘Everything Is Everthing’. The album is superbly produced by Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin and features nine songs that really focus on Donny’s so soulful voice and his keyboard playing. The tight rhythm section features Donny along with Chuck Rainey bass Cornell Dupree guitar and Al Jackson drums and percussion. ‘Giving Up’ is an amazing soulful piece of music, full of emotion and immaculate performances topped by King Curtis sax solo. Donny’s versions of Leon Russell ‘A Song For You’ , Billy Preston ‘Little Girl’ and Bobby Scott ‘He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother’ are also outstanding. ‘Take A Love Song’ is the only song on the album that Donny had a hand in writing, and it really shows his genius, a really uplifting track recorded In Chicago. Backing vocalists include Cissy Houston, Judy Clay, JR Bailey , Myrna Smith and a gospel choir amongst others who complement Donny , but there is no doubting the star of the show, so sad that he didn’t achieve legendary status during his short lifetime. This is music that really gets to your soul. This reissue from the original analogue masters gives it justice.
