This expansive offering of otherwise near-hidden Somalian funk from the early 80s is the result of an immersive project by Analog Africa boss Sammy Ben Redjeb that took him deep into the history of music in Mogadishu. The ‘New Bell’ sounding ‘Oohiyeh’ rolls along hypnotically, driving by a tough b-line, the West African disco-funk of ‘Yabaal’ is outstanding (think of William Onyebor and you get the idea) while the angular, tricky beat of ‘Heelo’ is made even better by the feel of the master tape on the verge of collapse. Rough, raw and uncompromising tracks like ‘Hiyeeley’ and ‘Aw Baahilowlow’ have a chugging, deep funk groove that distils the atmosphere of the original session nearly 40 years ago. ‘Keene Gardaran’ has a swaggering, desert-disco vibe, the pacey, previously unreleased syncopated ‘Salkhudigey’ is an accomplished slab of dancefloor funk while the punchy ‘Jaceyl Mirahiis’ crashes along with the female vocalist in fine form. Excellent stuff. Unmissable for African Funk fans.
