Originally released in 1970, this debut album from Mississippi born, Chicago based soulstress Ruby Andrews marked a break from being merely a singles artist and acted to launch her into the wider consciousness. The gritty title track has touches of Ike & Tina, her cover of the Brothers of Soul ‘Guess That Don’t Make Me A Loser’ dispenses with the sweet of the original and adds a touch of melancholy while ‘Casanova 70’ is a classic: punchy, raw and earthy production with Ruby’s plaintive vocals working well. The portentous funky soul of ‘You Can Run But You Can’t Hide’ is rich in atmosphere, the crashing ‘Help Yourself Lover’ is a pounding, uptempo dancer while the Barbara Mason-esq ‘Uh Uh Boy! That’s A No No’ was also recorded by Candace Love but sounds more orchestral here. Good album.
