Third Volume in this series that focuses on obscure, forgotten, rare and largely unheard funk. Some super tough 45s featured here: Clarence Reid’s ‘I Get My Kicks’ is one of his hardest to find, Saint John’s Canadian funker ‘Stand Up Baby’ is a ‘long lost’ spin from the ‘Deep Funk’ days, Nadine Brown’s pacey Georgia state winner ‘Leave Me Alone’ thunders out of the speakers while Leroy and the Drivers’ classic ‘Sad Chicken’ with it’s funereal opening sounds fresh again. Ellen Jackon’s ‘Ghetto Boogie’ is another classic from the rare funk scene while Jesse Morgan’s busy ‘I Gotta Get Back’ takes the JB blueprint and contorts it: unbelievably this is from Hawaii! Soul Express score with the ghetto vibes of ‘Determination’ (here with Parts 1 & 2 joined for full effect) while Billy Bailey’s moody, low-fi ‘You Better Stop’ originally appeared on the almost non-existent bay-Del logo. Good solid comp for fans of ‘Deep Funk’.
