Recorded on 13th January 1958, ‘Further Explorations’ is a typical Horace Silver date. The rhythm section comprises the wonderfully inventive Louis Hayes on drums plus Teddy Kotick on bass. The horn section features trumpeter Art Farmer and Clifford Jordan on tenor saxophone. The album kicks off in typically upbeat style with ‘The Outlaw’. It is a Latin tinged number featuring a great Art Farmer solo and typically rhythmic utterances form Silver and complex drum patterns from Hayes. ‘Melancholy Mood’ is a subdued number that Silver was to re-visit on ‘Blowin The Blues Away’. ‘Pyramid’ has as its title suggests, has an Eastern flavour. Art Farmer’s opening solo is rich and soulful whilst Clifford Jordan’s contribution equals that richness and depth. The slower ‘Moon Rays’ provides a lengthy platform for the likes of Clifford Jordan and then Art Farmer to stretch out and express themselves before the tempo increase for the finale. The blistering ‘Safari’ is Hard Bop heaven as the horns blaze away backed by Silver’s incisive piano lines that drive the rhythm relentlessly. The Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler standard ‘Ill Wind’ is a mellow though chirpy album closer. A fine Silver album.
