The Colours that Rise—comprised principally of Simeon Jones and Nathaniel Williams’—is an experimentation in modern jazz and pan-electronic music. Ambient elements, warm analogue swells and a heady brew of electronic and live instrumentation take the overall sound arc on a dizzying journey of baggy syncopated troughs, heavily nuanced broken rhythms and shimmering silver textures. Featuring collaborations from London based musicians and producers ranging from Yasmin Lacey to Yussef Dayes and Andrew Ashong, Grey Doubt bleeds with variety of different influences and styles, centring itself within the vogue of the new London Jazz movement. Released in May 2020 on Bradley Zero’s Peckham-based Rhythm Section imprint, Grey Doubt—in the opinion of this writer—is one of the most overlooked albums of the year, a must have for fans of London Jazz and it’s permutations.
