Recorded in 1973 at Royal Recording Studios, South Lauderdale, Memphis, Tennessee and released in 1974 this is perhaps Ann Peeble’s best known album and includes the huge title track ‘I Can’t Stand The Rain’, a minimal, atmospheric slab of southern bluesy soul. The warm Al Green-esq ‘(You Keep Me) Hanging On’ is a subtle, lush delight, the darker ‘Run, Run, Run’ shows the powerful range and malleability of Peeble’s voice while ‘If We Can’t Trust Each Other’ is a great mid tempo foot tapper. ‘You Got To Feed The Fire’ is a strong point on the album with those really strong, warm southern tones blending country-soul with a gospel edge while ‘I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down’ has a gloriously subdued majesty. Fantastic, essential southern classic.
