Bert Robinson’s second and final album ‘I Promise You Love’ was released in 1989. Al Hudson co –produced the mid tempo dancer ‘I Can’t let You Go’ and the beat ballad ‘Lover It’s Coming Back’ which are the album’s standout cuts. Zane Giles and Billy Osbourne’s ‘I’ll Be So good to you’ will remind you of Teddy P’s ‘Close the Door’.

Bert Robinson’s “I Promise You Love” was undeniably one of 1989’s absolute best but also one of the most criminally underrated and underexposed R&B/Soul CDs. The fact that this truly wonderful and absolutely beautiful CD got no airplay, failed to chart and came and went mostly unnoticed can only be explained by the knowledge that Hip-Hop and New Jack Swing were getting more and more airplay on the USA’s “urban contemporary” radio stations while traditional (i.e., “adult-oriented”) Soul vocalists were getting less and less airplay. Stunningly-beautiful ballads like “Lover It’s Coming Back”, “I Can’t Let You Go”, “I’ll Be So Good To You”, “Sleeping Alone”, “Back To The Basics” and “I’ll Be There” more than make this CD a must-have for anyone who loves smooth, heartfelt, passionate and romantic Soul music. Many thanks to Expansion Records for reissuing this excellent if little-known album on CD.
