The classic Coltrane drum/ bass duo of Jones and Garrison are joined by fellow quartet member McCoy Tyner on piano. A three-man reed section features Prince Lasha, Sonny Simmons and baritone sax man Charles Davis. Apart from Jones all contribute compositions to this very Trane sounding set. Standout is Davis’ modal ‘Half And Half’. Tyner’s ‘Oriental Flower’ is beautiful, whilst the interesting juxtaposition of styles on ‘Aborigines Dance In Scotland’ is beguiling. ‘Gettin On Way’ swings and is the most Coltrane-esque piece. All 6 tracks are quality. Recorded in 1963, ‘Illumination!’ is an outstanding example of modal Jazz with a touch of the avant-garde thrown in for good measure.
