21 year old Londoner Jacob Collier is already something of a YouTube sensation and his debut album is bound to further elevate his position in the attentions of contemporary music fans. Melding a myriad of styles this multi-instrumentalist employs deft vocal gymnastics to bring us an album that plays something of a ‘guess the influence’ game: everyone from Stevie Wonder to D’Angelo is referenced and the energy on tracks like ‘Woke Up Today’ contrasts with more calm moments as on ‘Hideaway’, the slow boogie of ‘Saviour’ and the chilled out ‘Down The Line’. Very skewed at times the closest comparison at present would be the Laura Mvula ‘Dreaming Room’ set. Different.
