Leeds combo The Sorcerers form the backbone of the ATA Records house band and on this imagined soundtrack – ‘In Search Of The Lost City Of The Monkey God’ – they carve out an atmospheric set that brings to mind low-budget, early 70s exploitation B-movies steeped in suspense. The sounds they’ve created almost become the film itself – as if as film could be hung onto the soundtrack – such is the strong cinematic feel here. There’s a cohesion and similarity to all the tracks, yet the feel and effect is powerful enough to hold the attention. Cuts like ‘Escape From The Catacombs’, ‘Summoning The Monkey God’ and ‘Treasured Sacrament’ bring to mind the Budos band while there are deft nods to Ethio-jazz, Euro library and blaxploitation throughout, the latter especially in ‘End Credits’ that also features Chip Wickham. A really well crafted concept that keeps you engaged throughout.
