Sublime collection of productions from Mainstream Records legend Bob Shand, this set focuses on tracks recorded between 1971-73 and shows how well Shand was able to mix spiritual jazz vibes with funky soul to craft the uber cool sound that has influenced the likes of Kamazi Washington and Shabaka Hutchings. The bustling street jazz groove of Roy Haynes ‘Senyah’ will always sound fresh, Buddy Terry’s warm, bouncing ‘Inner Peace’ bounces and grooves along apace while Frank Foster’s ‘Requiem For Dusty’ throws everything into the mix on a track that manages to sound like double the amount of players are actually on the record! The wonderful rhodes-lead ‘B.C’ from Dave Hubbard is a superb slab of semi-abstract spiritual, Shelly Mann’s ‘Infinity’ is the most avant-garde track on the set but don’t miss the superb, shape shifting ‘Love Song’ from Sony Red. Stellar productions, some of which have found their way into classic hip hop samples, too
