Kenny Burrell’s 1956 Blue Note debut is an example of the Bop guitarist at his best. A fine group that includes drummer Kenny Clarke and Miles Davis’ bassist Paul Chambers is augmented by percussionist Candido on six tracks, which gives gems like the Bossa tinged ‘Takeela’ a real Latin feel. Burrell’s clear tone and melodic sensibilities are perfectly suited to the take on Victor Young’s ‘Delilah’, whilst Kenny Clark’s ‘Rhythmorama’ is a percussive delight. His own ‘Blues For Skeeter’ and ‘Fugue N Blues’ slow the pace down and highlight his superb styling that made him Duke Ellington’s favourite guitarist.
