Jean Carne is best known for her four great Philly Soul albums that she recorded in mid to late 70’s. However her career started as a Jazz singer who recorded 3 albums with her then husband Doug Carn for the Black Jazz label in the early 70’s. Jean returns to her Jazz roots for the latest volume in the Jazz is Dead series.
Adrian Younge plays Keyboards, Organ, Guitar and saxophone whilst his co-writer and producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad is on Electric Bass and Mekala Session on drums. Jean’s equiset voice glides above the Spiritual and semi funky backed seven original songs. ‘The Summertime’ has more melody and is closest that anything on this album comes to Jean’s normal fare.
‘Black Rainbows’ , ‘Visions’, ‘People Of The Sun’, ‘My Mystical Life’ and ‘Black Love’ have a very spiritual and cosmic approach. Interesting album.
