Jazz Samba was the album that started the Bossa Nova craze in the US and was inspired by Charlie Byrd’s visit to Brazil in 1961. It features two Antonio Carlos Jobim pieces ‘Desafinado’ and the evocative ‘Samba De Uma Nota So’. Getz’s breathy tenor sax style suits the Bossa vibe, reflecting its sensual/ sexy vibe -check ‘Samba Trieste’ in particular. There is an easy swing to the album on which Byrd’s under-stated guitar melds with the subtle shifting percussion. ‘Jazz Samba’ is perfect for mellow moments or background listening, but remains a fantastic Jazz set, whose appeal extends beyond that genre’s afficandos.
