Former Tony! Toni! Tone! Member Raphael Saadiq delivers perhaps his most autobiographical album to date with ‘Jimmy Lee’, titled in tribute to his late brother. The pleading ‘Sinner’s Prayer’ is an epic, emotionally taut mid tempo while the swaggering ‘So Ready’ is driven by a rolling boogie B-line. ‘This World Is Drunk’ has echoes of Prince in his most evangelical, the lazy tempo of ‘I’m In Love’ has an edgy, slurred beat that keeps it mellow while ‘Belongs To God’ throws in a curveball with a slab of throwback, roughened gospel. The emphatic ‘Rikers Island’ is possibly the track of the album – a minor key, crushing beat ballad that soars before Saadiq closes out the album with the impassioned ‘Rearview’.
