Pianist, Jutta Hip is something of an enigma, born in Leipzig, raised in Nazi Germany and a clandestine Jazz fan.  She moved to the US in the mid 50’s and came under the guidance of Jazz critic Leonard Feather. She recorded a couple of albums before ‘Jutta Hipp With Zoot Sims’ but it is this set that established her reputation as one of those underground and under-appreciated talents Jazz music produces regularly.  Alongside Hipp and tenor saxophonist Sims, Ed Thigpen (drums) and Ahmed Abdul-Malik (bass) hold the core rhythm together, whilst Sims is aided by trumpeter Jerry Lloyd in the horn section.  The album was recorded on 28th July 1956.  The album starts with Zoots Sims’ ‘Just Blues’ a Hard Bop groove of note. The tempo slows for ‘Violets For Your Furs’, which is a pleasant sojourn.  The upbeat tempo returns for ‘Down Home’, a searing Blues on which the band gel.  The show tune ‘Almost Like Being In Love’ is a charming number that glides effortlessly with Hipp playing possibly her best solo on the album. ‘Wee Dot’ belts along and has that Hard Bop zip.  It grooves and grooves hard.  The intensity lowers for ‘Too Close For Comfort’ and Hipp shows a fine penchant for a melody and improvising around it.  ‘Jutta Hipp With Zoot Sims’ is a gem and one of those Blue Note recordings that escapes under the radar.  Which is a shame.
