Leeds based group The Lewis Express are a collective of musicians from the City’s ATA label who have combined their talents on this strong debut full length. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Ramsey Lewis, Young-Holt, Eddie Cano, Ray Bryant and Cannonball Adderley the seven-track album blends introspective spy drama sounding theme tunes such as the brooding opener ‘Love Can Turn A Man’ with the Axelrod-like ‘Theme From The Watcher’ with more upbeat moments like the latin swinger ‘Cancao De Momento’ and the handclapping South American flavoured ‘Straight Seven Strut’. The more downtempo moments are where they shine the most and ‘Last man On The Chain Gang’ is a highlight, too. Check the stop-start ‘Hawkshaw Philly’ for yet more odes to their heroes. Solid, engaging and a real grower.
