Led by Vivian and her husband, Chris Parks, ‘Life’ features a diverse cast of musicians including Saxophonist Casey Benjamin and Pianist Shedrick Mitchell as well as Brandee Younger, Keyon Harrold, Donny McCaslin, and Gregoire Maret, among others. The soulful house gem ‘No Greater Love’ contrasts with the understated, orchestrated version of ‘Under My Skin’, the expansive, jazzy ‘Superwoman’ and the skewed beats of ‘See Line Woman’ show yet more stylistic twists and turns while the relaxed vocal jazz epic ‘Lush Life’ again features those breezy strings and some blissful keys. ‘Strange Fruit’ is a great, atmospheric cover version with snappy drums and Vivian’s voice full of passion and feeling. Good varied set.
