This live date from 21st May 1970 remained unreleased until the mid-90’s and now gets a deserved vinyl reissue. Hammond organist Lonnie Smith is in top form and joined by George Benson, saxophonists Ronnie Cuber and Dave Hubbard plus drummer Joe Dukes and a couple of percussion players. It is a funky affair as the James Brown inspired ‘I Can’t Stand It’, the foot tapping ‘Play It Back’ and the frenetic ‘Expressions’ illustrate. There is a gritty cover of Sly Stone’s ‘I Want To Thank You’ that oozes Funk and a fast and furious version of Miles’ ‘Seven Steps To Heaven’. ‘Live At The Club Mozambique’ was a special date that we can all still enjoy.
