Released in 1971 this album showcases the concert he played with his band the Kingpins who were supporting and backing soul singer Aretha Franklin at the Fillmore West venue in San Francisco in March of that year. This set features all the instrumental grooves laid down by Curtis and his group before Aretha took the stage including a belting 7 minute version of King’s classic “Memphis Soul Stew”, and long versions of “Changes”, “I Stand Accused”, and “Soul Serenade” – as well as more compacted versions of “A Whole Lotta Love” and “Ode To Billy Joe”. Tragically King Curtis’ life would be ended just a week after its release.
