Recorded and released in 1960, the two volumes of ‘Meets You At The Jazz Corner Of The World’ originate from the same concert at Birdland. The quintet recorded many of the Jazz Messengers’ finest LPs. Jymie Merritt is immense on bass and the under-rated Bobby Timmons fills the piano chair with aplomb. The Horns are magnificent – Lee Morgan on trumpet and Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone. Morgan’s ‘What Knows’ is a typical robust and pugnacious Jazz Messengers tune. Hank Mobley’s ‘The Opener’ is a nice bright Bop groove, whilst ‘Round About Midnight’ is given an intriguing take. Blakey’s drums seem anarchic, bit it is Shorter’s and Morgan’s horns that take this version to another level. The Hard Bop take of ‘The Breeze And I’ is bright and, excuse the pun, breezy. This great set of Jazz Messengers are in top form on what is a very fine set of Hard Bop tunes.
