Recorded and released in 1960, the two volumes of ‘Meets You At The Jazz Corner Of The World’ originate from the same concert at Birdland. The quintet recorded many of the Jazz Messengers’ finest LPs. Jymie Merritt is immense on bass and the under-rated Bobby Timmons fills the piano chair with aplomb. The Horns are magnificent – Lee Morgan on trumpet and Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone. Volume 2 kicks off in fine Hard Bop style with Hank Mobley’s ‘High Mode’. ‘Night Watch’, however, takes it to another level. It is Hard Bop of the finest quality with Morgan and Shorter riding Blakey propane driven drums that sound like a volcano waiting to explode. Awesome. ‘The Things I Love’ keeps the mood upbeat. The ensemble work is tremendous. Shorter’s ‘The Summit’ is defined in the opening passage with a solo of intent and no little dexterity. Both volumes of ‘Meets You At The Jazz Corner Of The World’ are essential Bop LPs and illustrate why the Jazz Messengers are considered amongst the most exciting ensembles Jazz ever.
