Trumpeter Lee Morgan died tragically young at 33, shot by his girlfriend/ partner. In his short turbulent life, he recorded some of the greatest Jazz of the Hard Bop era. He was an integral part of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers on more than one occasion and featured in its finest horn line-up alongside Wayne Shorter and Curtis Fuller. The albums featured on this box set show Morgan at his ebullient best both as leader and sideman. Check his contribution to John Coltrane’s ‘Blue Train’ and Art Blakey’s ‘A Night In Tunisia’ plus his own ‘The Cooker’, ‘Leeway’ and ‘Take Twelve’. The box also includes the obscure and superb album recorded for Vee Jay by The Young Lions, a super group that featured Lee alongside the likes of Wayne Shorter, Bobby Timmons and Louis Hayes.
