Producer Alan Douglas suggested to Duke Ellington a collaboration with bassist Charles Mingus and drummer Max Roach. Given the diverse styles of these three legendary musicians, it is testament to their talent that the chemistry between them generated an album of the quality of ‘Money Jungle’. Ellington wrote or co-wrote all seven tracks. Four tracks were written for this session that was recorded on 17th September 1962. Like his Impulse! Album with John Coltrane, it illustrates the Duke’s adaptability to the changes that Jazz was experiencing in the early 1960’s. The brilliant ‘Money Jungle’ is a ‘modern’ track for that time and Ellington incorporates elements of the leftfield into his playing. There is a shimmering beauty to ‘Fleurette Africaine’ and ‘Very Special’ is a subtle ballad. This version of ‘Warm Valley’ is exquisite. The up-tempo ‘Wig Wise’ is a Bop number that has hints of Bud Powell to it. This trio version of ‘Caravan’ is intriguing early 60’s take and quite different to his recordings of it. Roach and Mingus sit out most of the lovely ‘Solitude’ playing only the last minute or so. The dynamics of each musicians and their inter-play add a spice to an excellent set.
