The legends that are Con Funk Shun are back with a brand new 14 track offering on Shanachie in the form of ‘More Than Love’ and deliver a slick, classy and well polished set of grown folks soul sounds replete with tight harmonies, and good blend of old school vocals and new school production and some catchy tunes. The mood is very much in the romantic soul vein – smooth grooves, late night, easy vibes and luxurious, mature songs. The stepper ‘It’s On Tonight’ has a great subtle swagger, the title track ‘More Than Love’ has some good throwback moments, ‘Dance With A Grown Man’ fights the corner for ‘gentlemen of an age’ (to put it politely! – is that a riff from ‘Say No Go’ tinkling in there?) while they even squeeze in an interesting cover of ‘Move On Up’. After a baker’s dozen of mainly modern day grooves they totally wind the clock back with the jazzy, uptempo jazz funker ‘Nite Liter’: the sound of Con Funk Shun of old!
